Location location

The Swan Country House retreat is a converted farmhouse surrounded by the spectacular Cambrian mountains. A stone’s throw away from the vast Elan Valley Estate with its many walking and bike routes, reservoirs, rivers, Victorian dams, woodlands and much, much more. The bustling town of Rhayader is a short drive away offering a variety of gastro pubs, food and craft shops. The ancient coastal university town of Aberystwyth is an hour’s drive along one of the best driving roads in Wales through breath-taking scenery. Inside

With its charm-filled quirky interiors, this inviting dog friendly country house offers a peaceful and secluded base for families and friends wishing to explore the stunning Welsh countryside or celebrate a special occasion in style.
Sleeping up to 10 people in good-sized bedrooms, one with a large balcony overlooking the hills and four bathrooms, one of which is downstairs. There is large conservatory with panoramic views of the mountains with a 14 foot oak dining room table and comfy lounge area. The TV room with its vintage James Bond film posters and log burner is perfect to snuggle up and watch a film or two on the 42” Smart TV and an ideal room for children to have some space whilst the adults relax in the conservatory.

Bedrooms and bathrooms

All four bedrooms are on the first floor and offer the following:

  • Views over the hills
  • Deep pocket sprung mattress
  • Hypoallergenic duvet and pillows
  • Crisp white sheets with quirky accessories
  • Luxury Mydffai toiletries, fluffy towels and hair dryers

First bedroom at the top of the stairs “Seren” (meaning “star”) is large, bright room with an elegant and peaceful feel and home to a lovely antique Welsh dressing table,  comfy king size bed and further single bed.  With beautiful countryside views from dual aspect windows, this room is next door to the first of four bathrooms with showers.

On the other side of the bathroom can be found the second bedroom “The Cwtch” (meaning “hug”).  This good-sized room can be either be a twin or a super king and is a cosy, charming space overlooking the fields.  Decorated in warm tones with a stunning, vibrant mandala wall-hanging, this cosy room lives up to its name.  Don’t worry if you think one bathroom between four is not enough, there is another bathroom downstairs off the TV room.

Further on down the hallway are the other two en suite rooms starting with the third bedroom “Awel” (meaning “gentle breeze”).  This room has a serene feel and a large, sunny balcony with bistro table and chairs overlooking the hills. The spacious room has a king size solid wood bed and a walk-in wardrobe. This room can also  easily accommodate a JAY-BE bed for a child or teenager.

The fourth bedroom “Heulwen” (meaning “sunshine”) is a cosy yet sunny room with opposite windows overlooking the beautiful Welsh hills.  Decorated in a fresh, contemporary style with eye catching soft furnishings, this room has a smart colonial feel and a perfect space to unwind.  The king size bed has a large and striking headboard, perfect for the bedtime reader.

Outside

There is a large south facing sunny terrace for alfresco dining or relaxing with comfy chairs and a verdant, secluded garden, both with glorious far-reaching views across the Marteg Valley. There is also a large pond full of koi carp, pretty pond plants, colourful Irises in the summer and the odd frog. Wildlife is in abundance at The Swan, including many red kites swooping and mewing over the house, nut hatches, woodpeckers, curlews and at night bats and owls. As we border the Elan Valley Dark Sky park, on a clear night star gazing is truly magical including sights of the Milky Way and comets on a clear night.

Free WIFI throughout the property.

Strong 4G outside the property with most networks.

All bedrooms and have TV rooms have Smart TVs with Freeview and access to Netflix, YouTube etc. and USB sockets.

Family:

Babes in arms and children are very welcome.  One travel cot and highchair are available.  Please note there is a deep pond in the car park so children must always be supervised. Children 5+ welcomed.

Practicalities:

The 18′ kitchen has a large electric Rangemaster with a hot plate, five gas hobs and two electric ovens, a fridge-freezer, dishwasher, microwave and washing machine in a separate cupboard.

Large off-street private parking for numerous cars and bikes.  Lockable storage for bicycles.

Concierge service:

If you are having a special party, we can be on hand if requested in advance as we live next door, so we can help you to ensure your celebration is a memorable one. This can include sourcing special cakes, party decorations, outside caterers and even an ice cream van for the afternoon.
Happy to take delivery of groceries in advance, bike hire or special day excursions for example fishing on one of the local rivers or lakes or an off-road 4×4 trip through the Elan Valley organised through local companies.
“Posh picnics” can be ordered and delivered to an agreed location within the local area.

Laundry room available in the stables for use by guests.

N.B. all additional costs for the above to be paid prior to arrival where applicable.

Generous welcome hamper on arrival for both humans and pooches where applicable.
Luxury toiletries in each bathroom.

One log basket, kindling and fire lighters on arrival and available to purchase thereafter.

Pets:

One well-behaved dog subject to small charge of £25 per stay. There is a large garden to exercise and plenty of surrounding walks.

Horses:

Stabling and ride out available for up to 6 horses subject to prior arrangement and daily livery to be agreed. Trekking route advice available through a local specialist.

Camping:

If there are more than 10 in the group and are happy to camp, we have a large garden with a water supply a short walk to the downstairs bathroom in the main house.  Additional costs will apply.

Activities

There are so many to choose from, so here are a few of our personal favourites.

Explore Elan Valley Estate on foot or by bike, with its expansive reservoirs, dramatic dams, woodlands and endless walking and cycle routes.

Royal Welsh Showground host to the infamous annual agricultural show, the “Glastonbury for farmers” and many other interesting events

Watch and photograph the red kites at Gigrin Farm Feeding Centre, the osprey at the Dyfi Osprey Project or the dippers at Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve at Gilfach.

Trek to the source of the river Severn through the beautiful Hafren Forest.

Take the mountain road to the coast at Aberystwyth and enjoy fish and chips or an ice cream on the promenade.
